At Âme Atendre, we believe in the power of human connection—whether through sharing a meal around a beautifully set table or through the stories we tell. In our latest podcast episode, we had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Alex Gamble, a palliative care doctor, to explore the delicate yet profound topic of death and dying. Dr. Gamble’s insights not only help us confront our fears but also inspire us to live life with intention and buoyancy.
The Power of Vulnerability: Approaching Life and Death with Openness
Just as Âme Atendre encourages vulnerability and curiosity in design, Dr. Gamble advocates for these qualities in life. In our conversation, he shares how embracing vulnerability allows us to face the realities of mortality without fear. Dr. Gamble defines this openness as existential maturity. Through facing reality and maintaining a sense of existential maturity can we find peace. By being open to the concept of death, we can approach life with a deeper appreciation and a greater sense of purpose. Dr. Gamble’s philosophy resonates deeply with our mission at Âme Atendre—to create moments that matter. Whether it’s through a thoughtfully designed piece of tableware or a heartfelt conversation about life’s impermanence, we believe that true connection happens when we approach each moment with care and intention.
Crafting Moments of Connection: Life’s Final Chapter
At Âme Atendre, our design process is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about crafting objects that foster connection. In the same way, Dr. Gamble’s work is about helping people find connection and meaning, even in life’s final chapter. He discusses the importance of being present with loved ones and of savoring the simple joys. So many decisions we make, be it subconsciously, are to cushion the reality of our fate. Dr.Gamble, in his own wisdom and the lessons learned from patients, emphasizes the importance of living freely and prioritizing connection and conversation.
Living Buoyantly: A Lesson in Resilience
Dr. Gamble’s approach to palliative care is a testament to the power of connection. When talking to patients, Dr. Gamble meets them where they’re at, communicating with each patient based on their emotional and psychological needs. When addressing such a profound topic, Dr. Gamble shares the importance of listening and meeting each and every patent where they are at. Just as our products are crafted to withstand the test of time, so too are the relationships and moments we cherish. This approach applies to every conversation we have an connection we build – it is deeply important to meet people where they are at.
Millenia Old Lessons
Dr. Gamble references Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, in which prisoners are chained inside a dark cave, facing a wall and they can only see shadows cast on the wall by objects behind them, illuminated by a fire. When one prisoner is freed and leaves the cave, encountering the outside world for the first time, he realizes that the real world is vastly more complex and when he returns to the cave to share his discovery, the others resist and refuse to believe him, illustrating the challenge of enlightening those who are content with their limited understanding. This allegory illustrates the innate human resistance to understanding death. To put it plainly, we would rather not know. At Âme Atendre, we lean into conversations that may be difficult or uncomfortable, all in the pursuit of enlightenment and connection.
A Reflection on Life and Design
Listening to Dr. Gamble’s wisdom, we are reminded of the importance of living with intention—whether it’s choosing a piece of tableware that will become part of your family’s story or making time for a conversation that matters. At Âme Atendre, we believe that the objects we surround ourselves with should enhance our lives, just as the conversations we have should enrich our souls.
